Top tracks of 2018 #11 – Father John Misty, Hen Ogledd, Goat Girl & Franz Ferdinand

Is it me, or has the general quality of videos improved this year? This effort from Father John Misty certainly has a lot of effort put in, some great SFX, lovely art deco architecture and complements the song perfectly.  It was also Andy’s choice yesterday, so is, I think our second overlap. This will not be the only song in my 2018 list to reference hotels, but more of that later. Father John Misty is someone who has flittered around the outskirts of my listening, although he did feature at #17 in Andy’s 2015 choices, which may be the first time I came across him. This track however – Mr Tillman – intrigued from the first time I heard it and got a lot of airplay on 6Music earlier this year…

Roy

My next choice is by Hen Ogledd; which in Welsh means ‘Old North’ – a kingdom roughly equivalent to a region covering southern Scotland and northern England, prior to the Middle Ages.The band was initially a partially improvisatory vehicle for experimental music made by Geordie folkist, Richard Dawson and Welsh harpist Rhodri Davies. They’ve added a couple of members and decided to see if they can make a ‘pop’ record – albeit a warped, psychedelic post-punk kind of pop. This is their Super Furries meets solo Peter Gabriel lead off track from their album ‘Mogic’. I first heard this when Welsh national treasure, Huw Stephens, sat in Steve Lamacq’s show – the thought he was playing this on his Radio 1 show is very satisfying. #11 ‘Problem Child’ by Hen Ogledd.

My number 11 choice is not to everyone on the contributors taste, but this is a democracy (allegedly!), so I’ll press on regardless. FF have been around since the early 2000s but this is their first album in five years, with a different line-up. I saw them play an energetic set in Cambridge back in February, whilst promoting their “Always Ascending” album. This wasn’t a single but is probably my favourite track from it, so no official video, and hence the slightly-dodgy mobile live clip. I love the way it changes at the end with the “at the over 30’s singles night – it’s bleak, it’s bleak!!” Still makes me chuckle every time I hear it. Nice 80’s synths too!

A couple of major presentations and various client functions are the reason for the correspondence gap. The relative modest commentary on the next few entries doesn’t diminish the the enthusiasm for the next couple of tracks, nor the general thought that readers would do well to dig deeper into the related discographies. First up is an all girl punk band that Roy flagged as part of the new wave of punk bands in response to Richard’s selection of Idles at #12. To give you some sense of the band’s sensibility, the album’s 20 tracks come in at a total run time of about 40 minutes sensibility. I really wanted to name check all female bands like The Slits or Beth Ditto (and there are elements of these along with classic grunge like a female Nirvana) , but Goat Girl’s album is remarkably diverse with tunes like the near Celtic folk of “Viper Fish” and the spoken work & discordant piano of “A Swamp Dog’s Tale” and the Moriarty like “Cracker Drool”. But the track I keep coming back to, and my number 11, is “The Man”.
