We continued the tradition on this site of running down our 20 favourite tracks of the year, a tradition dating back to the days of John Peel’s Festive Fifty when these lists would be circulated as handwritten lists. In the 90s we moved to spreadsheets and for the last five years we have shared our nominations online for you to enjoyment, derision or bafflement. Think of it as a gradually building mix tape or – as someone called it yesterday – a musical advent calendar.
So from Sunday 4th December, my musical comrades in arms Roy, Andy and I nominated a track each day, building to our songs of the year on Christmas Eve.
2016 was not a great year for Planet Earth, but musically was there a lot to cherish? Let’s review the evidence.
