Top Tracks of 2013 – Number 11

Flexin

My number 11 is from Caernarfon’s Masters In France, who perform tracks in both English and Welsh. They are probably more famous for ‘Playing With My Friends’ from the Ikea ad, but I prefer this earlier single, Flexin.  The fade out in my opinion owes more than a little to ‘Giant’ by The The from Soul Mining….

  1. Anything that owes a little to The The’s “Giant” is ok by me!

Right, continuing the Celtic theme and just missing out on my all-important top 10 is the first single to be taken from the much-celebrated “Monkey Minds in the Devil’s Time” album. Former member of the Beta Band, this is Steve Mason’s second solo effort and is “in a grand tradition of indie boys doing idiosyncratic electronic pop, a line stretching back through Hot Chip, New Order, Talk Talk and Brian Eno”. You can’t say fairer than that. Number 11…

  2. My number 11 is ‘Black Skinhead’ by Kanye West. Say what you like about Mr Kardashian (and most people do) he’s pushing the boundaries of hip-hop further than anybody else, witness this stripped back industrial/glam mash-up, By some distance, the most radical and challenging track/video released by a mainstream artist in 2013.

    1. I’ve got a feeling we’ll see a few more big hitters in the Top10’s playing a high line and pressurising opponents in their own half.
