2012 – Number 12: The Messenger

One of a very few number of musicians who drift from band to band as a ‘right hand man for hire’ (Smiths, The The, Electronic, Modest Mouse, The Cribs, it is incredible that after nearly 30 years in the ‘business’ Johnny Marr has never released a solo album until now. This lead track certainly bodes well.

  1. Yes, the boy certainly knows a thing or two about how to knock out a decent tune.

Talking of catchy little tunes, here’s my number 12. Once again, it could probably be cut quite considerably as it doesn’t really develop any further in the second half, but when you’ve done all the good work in the first half you can afford to coast thereafter. I’ll resist the temptation to make any analogies with last night’s footy. Number 12…

    1. Fantastic track from the greatest guitarist of his generation – totally shocked its not any higher in your 20 Richard.
The Hooded Fang track appears to be made up of a collage of garage/surf rock tracks from the 60’s and as a result is, much like an underperforming mid-table Premier League team assembled at great cost, somewhat inferior to the sum of its parts.

      You spoke too soon Richard……..

My Number 12 – Inhaler by Foals
Gets better and better each time I hear it and all the better for them discovering their inner Mudhoney. A brilliant video always helps

  2. I have heard this a few times on 6 Music and made a mental note to find out what it was, but never did, so thanks for this. 26 songs into our Top Twenties and still no overlap – not just on songs but also on artists! How much longer can this continue I wonder? Will the upcoming Top 10s have more commonality or have we been living in parallel but adjacent universes all year?
